Indian Premier league is private league sponsored by Board of Control in India. It is based on format of English Premier League football where business is incorporated with sports to promote it.

When the IPL was launched in 2008, there were total eight franchise teams from different states of the country. With the new auction of team in the year 2010, team increased to ten including new built Sahara Pune Warriors and Kochi IPL. Sahara Pune Warriors is owned by Sahara Group while Kochi IPL is owned by Rendezvous Sports Group of Kerala. Amount paid to BCCI for purchasing the franchise team amount to Rs. 1,702 Crore and Rs. 1,533 Crore for Pune Warriors and Kochi IPL respectively.

In the earlier 2010, BCCI terminated contract with the two of the earlier franchise name Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab for breach of contract on share holding pattern transfer. Both teams filed case in the Bombay High Court and got stay on the order on the condition of Bank Security Guarantee. This way total 10 teams participated in the IPL 2011 - Season 4.

The team list for IPL 4, is yet not confirmed due to pending case against Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab. If both team win the case then all the ten teams will participate in the year 2012 otherwise Eight team would participate in the event.
